February 2017!!

The Month ff February will be one of February brings with it 5 films to review, the first being Rings.

Run Time: 102 Minutes

Starring- Starring-Vincent D'OnofrioAimee Teegarden and Laura Wiggins

Plot-"A young woman finds herself on the receiving end of a terrifying curse that threatens to take her life in seven days".

My Thoughts

I was a big fan of the ring and the ring 2 and was excited to see that a new installment in the series was coming (even though I am not a fan iof the title of the film). I went into this movie with optimism that this film would be decent to say the least, that was not the case, the film was pretty underwhelming overall and that disappointed me greatly, I wanted to like this movie so bad, but i couldn't. The acting was terrible all across the board especially the main character of Julia (played by Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz) her performance was very wooden and she showed no emotion whatsoever for me. The only cast member who did a passable job was Vincent D'Onofrio for his performance as Burke, other than him the performances were all forgettable, which set the tone for the film/ The Plot was similar to the other films in the franchise, Samara returned but her origins were explained in another way which was nice to see, I was glad they went a different direction with her beginnings and I did enjoy it for the most part, I will say there was a story line involving Samrara's mother that is just dropped in the film with no answer given as to why, I felt that was disappointing to see and rubbed me the wrong way, if a story line is introduced especially an important one finish the story line or don't bring it in at all. The ending if this film really bothered me, the filmmakers made it very obvious they want to do a sequel, which I do not agree with, if this film was an indication of were they want to take the franchise I say stop now, I can only see it getting worse. I honestly Don't have much else positive to say about this film. it was a very underwhelming film, that I was very excited to see but was let down by, Terrible Acting, disappointing Plot, terrible ending. Rotten Tomatoes gave thsi film a 5% saying "Rings may offer ardent fans of the franchise a few threadbare thrills, but for everyone else, it may feel like an endless loop of muddled mythology and rehashed plot points" I agreefor the most part the ploy was basically a rehash but told a bit differently and overall the plot for me was worse than the first two films in the series. I would not recommend this film to anyone to see, even fans of the first two films, it was overall a bad film.

Rating

Bad Acting, Bad Plot, Terrible Ending Pass 6.0/10!!!

The Next film to review is John Wick:Chapter 2

Run Time:122 Minutes

Starring-Keanu ReevesIan McShane and John Leguizamo

Plot-"Legendary hitman John Wick is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome where he squares off against some of the world’s deadliest killers".

My Thoughts

I did not see the first John Wick in theaters (after hearing about the puppy being killed in the movie decided it wasn't a movie I wanted to see) I caught the film on TV and was able to fast forward past the Scene where the puppy dies. The first John Wick was much better than I expected and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was early anticipating the sequel when I heard new s of it. After seeing the second film I have to say I enjoyed t his film very much as well. The action was non stop which was great and it was done the right way (unlike Resident Evil:The Final Chapter). The fight scenes were done really well also. The plot was not completely original but it flowed along beautiful over the 2 hours and 2 minutes. Keanu Reeves is an actor who I feel gets wrongly criticized for his performances over the years, I have always enjoyed his films and he always delivers in my opinion and this film was not an exception, He knows how to play John Wick perfectly and it really adds to the total movie package. The cast overall did a good job (wasn't a huge fan Common;s character but he wasn't terrible) I will say I did not like the main villain in this film (Played by Riccardo Scamarcio) for me he was too arrogant and Pompous for my liking, and with a movie about assassins he seemed like he didn't like to get his hands dirty which made him feel less threatening in my opinion. I did enjoy that the film took John Wick to locations just not based in the US, the whole Italy sequence was awesome and I really enjoyed all of it. I will add that the film did run a little long for me, I think the same effect could have been made from a film that was 1 hour and 45 minutes, but its a minor gripe overall it didn't really effect the film, but certain parts scenes lingered on, where I felt the scenes could have been shortened or cut completely to save time and it would not have made a difference in the overall feel of the film.Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 90% saying " John Wick: Chapter 2 does what a sequel should -- which in this case means doubling down on the non-stop, thrillingly choreographed action that made its predecessor so much fun". and I agree 100 percent this was a very good film, I enjoyed it from start to finish, and I would recommend it to anyone who was a fan of the first film, a fan of Keanu Reeves or someone who just wants to see a good action film with non stop action, and great fight scenes and a with the way this film ended a 3rd chapter could be in,the works, And I woulds not be opposed to that at all.

Rating

Non stop action, excellent fight scenes and overall enjoyable 8.3/10!!

The Third Film up for Review is Fist Fight

Run Time:91 Minutes

Starring-Ice CubeCharlie Day and Christina Hendricks

Plot-"When one school teacher (Charlie Day) gets the other (Ice Cube) fired, he is challenged to an after-school fight".

My Thoughts

Comedy films are always very subjective, what one person may find funny another may find dull and boring. In the case of Fist Fight, for me the film was not funny overall. it had a few parts that were mildly entertaining and funny but the film from start to finish wasn't funny enough for me to say that its worth seeing. Most of the Jokes just fell flat for me and by  the end of the film I felt myself saying "that's it". I can honestly say there was only one sequence that I would call funny and it wasn't because of what was said it was more the shock of the scene (hint its the  daughters concert performance). Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 33% saying "Fist Fight boasts a surplus of comedic muscle but flails lazily, and far too few of its jokes land with enough force to register". I agree overall and would go further to say basically all of the Jokes fell flat and I cannot recommend for anyone to see this film, even if jsut to waste 90 minutes of times.

Not Funny 5.2/10!!!

The fourth film to review is The Great Wall.

Run Time:104 Minutes

Starring-Matt DamonPedro Pascal and Willem Defoe

Plot-"A mystery centered around the construction of the Great Wall of China".

My Thoughts

I heard about this film shortly before it was set to come out, I checked out the trailer and decided to review this film. I will say that overall this film was a disappointment in all facets. the only redeeming quality of this film for me was the visuals. The film visually was beautiful, the costume design was also very well done (in particular the armor of the Great Wall Clan), the CG was cheesy and it was easy to tell what was CG and what was not which was sad to see from a film with a budget of this nature ($150 million). The acting overall was underwhelming by everyone involved. The banter between Matt Damon's character (William) and Pedro Pascal (Tovar) was occasionally a funny and i found myself  chuckling a few times, but other than that it was mostly wooden from everyone in the cast and I felt no real connection with any of the characters, which is always a negative with a film of this nature, as I didn't care if any of the characters lived or died. The battle scenes i thought would be exceptional in this film, but as much of this film It was underwhelming which was greatly surprising for me. Another aspect of this film I did not like was the Willem Dafoe's character, in general I felt his acting talent was wasted in this film by the writers and the way his character was portrayed it was such a let down for me. The Plot iu thought was an interesting idea, I liked the idea of the Great Wall being built to keep supernatural beings at bay, but the execution was just boring to see play out on screen, and it made fort an overall lackluster performance adding in bad acting and cheesy CG and its bad all around. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 36% saying " For a Yimou Zhang film featuring Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe battling ancient monsters, The Great Wall is neither as exciting nor as entertainingly bonkers as one might hope". and I agree this film had such potential but missed out on all the opportunities it could have had to be a good film.

Rating

Total Letdowen expected so much more and the film could have been much more. 6.5/10!!!

The Fifth and final film to review this month is Get Out.

Run Time:103 Minutes

Starring-Bradley WhitfordAllison Williams and Daniel Kaluuya

Plot-" young African American man visits his Caucasian girlfriend's cursed family estate".

My Thoughts

This film came onto my Radar late in the year of 2016, I saw a trailer of the film and thought I would give it a try, I didn't have great expectations for it initially. I will say here and now, that I was so wrong. This was an excellent film and as of now the best I have seen this year. The plot wasn't exactly something new to the table, but the twists and turns that the film takes you three was something to behold. The acting was brilliant by everyone involved (with special mention to Daniel Kaluuya as Chris). this film did a really good job of building up to the climax and the ending, and the acting by the entire cast played a very important role in setting the tone and atmosphere of this film. What I really liked about this film was not just the acting or the plot when looking at them individually, it was how everything weaved together to create a very good film that kept me interested the entire 103 minute run time. This film had a little bit of many genres (Comedy,Horror,Suspense,Action) which was nice to see, it had many little elements that blended together very well. I will say that for me the comedic moments (Mostly Proved by Lil Rey Howery in his role as Rod) were not funny for me, but that is a subjective topic when it comes to comedy. The Soundtrack was another aspect of this film that I did not enjoy, it didn't flow well with the tone of the film in my opinion and was more of a distraction that a compliment to the film. One more aspect of this film I greatly enjoyed was just the overall feeling of tension between all of the characters, it really felt like something was going on and all of the cast acted accordingly and i loved seeing it play out during the duration of the movie. The ending of this film for me was the make or break moment, a bad ending can ruin any movie and this was no exception, how this film ended was going to determine how good this film actually was for me. I have to say that the ending was perfect and tied up all of the loose ends and explained everything for the viewer to connect the dots. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a rare rating of 100% saying ": Funny, scary, and thought-provoking, Get Out seamlessly weaves its trenchant social critiques into a brilliantly effective and entertaining horror/comedy thrill ride". As I mentioned earlier for me the film wasn't funny, but it had so many more elements from other genre's that this wasn't an issue. Overall I highly recommend this film it was interesting throughout, had excellent acting, a very tense atmosphere and pacing and a great ending,, I applaud Jordan Peele for putting out such a great film for his first directorial Effort and I look forward to his movies in the future.
