July 2015!!!

The Month of July brings 4 movies to review the first being Terminator:Genisys Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney.

Plot

"John Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect Sarah Connor, but when he arrives in 1984, nothing is as he expected it to be."

My Thoughts

I am a pretty big fan of the "Terminator" series (T2 is my favorite of the Bunch) I was pretty excited to hear that they where making a new installment in the franchise (Salvation rubbed me the wrong way). After seeing the film I can say that it was a solid film and has me interested to see where the new trilogy will take us. Starting with the cast Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen for you Game Of Thrones Fan) was decent as Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton for me will always be Sarah Connor). this was my first time actually seeing her act and she was solid (though her English accent did slip out a few times), but overall she played the character well and was believable,I will keep my eye out for her and look forward to see her acting in different roles in the future. Jai Courtney played the role of Kyle Reese a very important character in the "Terminator" universe, I have to say overall he did a decent job in his role for me he was actually better than the previous Actors who have played kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin in "Salvation" and Micheal Biehn in "Terminator") I have seen Jai Courtney in a number of films and this was the best performance in my opinion I have seen from him, I look forward to seeing how his future performances in this role expand. I don't need to say much about Arnold he is "Terminator" and he did an awesome Job in this film, I like the way in this film he had a bit more of a "Human" feel to him it was refreshing and nice to see, in most of the other films his character was a little to "Robotic" if you get my drift, he had some emotion in this one and it really played well for his character as the film played out. The most important character in the "Terminator" series is John Connor, anyone who has seen the other films in the series will know we have seen him in many different life stages (Edward Furlong in T2 is my favorite iteration of John Connor). Jason Clarke took his turn as John Connor, and I have to say overall he was okay not the Best (Edward Furlong) but also not the worst (Nick Stahl). His acting style for me felt a bit stilted and lacked emotion, overall he felt stoic in his delivery and mannerisms (I have never seen this actor in anything else so I Have nothing to base this on). This film serves as a reboot of the "Terminator" Franchise so previous knowledge of the past films is not really needed for those viewing this film who have not seen any of the other ones. This was an interesting direction to take as for me it was unexpected, after seeing it play out over the course of two hours, I can say that I am excited to see where it goes from here, the plot was easy to follow and worked well. The special effects in this film were top notch and the settings were done very well there are three different time periods in this film 1984,2017 and 2029 (1997 is mentioned but never visited) and all three time periods felt very different to each other which was cool to see how the three periods over the curse of the film came together. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 27% saying " Mired in its muddled mythology, Terminator: Genisys is a lurching retread that lacks the thematic depth, conceptual intelligence, or visual thrills that launched this once-mighty franchise." I disagree with this very much I thought the film was solid and worth seeing for those that are fans of the "Terminator" universe. Overall I would say this is my 3rd favorite in the series (Behind T2 and T1) its a reboot that has me excited to see where the "Terminator" series goes from here.

The next film to review is "The Gallows"starring Reese Mishler, Pfeifer Brown and Ryan Shoos

Plot

"20 years after a horrific accident during a small town school play, students at the school resurrect the failed show in a misguided attempt to honor the anniversary of the tragedy - but soon discover that some things are better left alone".

My Thoughts

When I first saw the trailer for this film I was pretty interested in seeing this movie as the trailer made the look to be a new take on Found footage horror films, which are usually pretty underwhelming. After seeing this film i can say this is the worst film I have seen this year so far, I will not spend much time on the review for this as the film is not worth going into depth on why it is bad, I will say the cast is full of unknown actors which can be good if the actors have ability, in this case they do not and it looked to me the casting director just said find 4 teens who look good, regardless of acting ability. The film suffered horribly from this there was not one character in this film that the audience could make a connection with and I didn't really care what the characters where going through as the film played out. This film was rated R which for me is always a good sign for a horror movie, the problem is I do not see why this film had that rating there was nothing in this film other than some foul language that would warrant an R rating. The plot of the film was very cliched and has been seen in many other horror films (Ghost haunting) I was hoping the film being a found footage film would differentiate from the norm when it comes to films like this, sadly that was not the case. The film had a few jump scares thrown in there but other than that it was not scary or entertaining at all, the only aspect I liked about the film was the POV changes that happened that allowed us to see certain aspects that happened in the film that otherwise the audience would not have been able to see. this film truly was a letdown for me I was expecting a decent horror film, But i will put this in the "Trailer was better than the movie" category and move on. one last thing the most infuriating aspect of this film was the ending, it was so cliched and I saw it coming when there was around 30 minutes left in the film and to actually see it happen on the screen made it that much worse as I still had hope that maybe I was wrong and the ending would be different sadly it wasn't. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 16% saying "Narratively contrived and visually a mess, The Gallows sends viewers on a shaky tumble to the bottom of the found-footage horror barrel." I agree with everything said here film was a disaster and as I mentioned earlier worst film I have seen this year so far, I do not recommend to see it unless you have absolutely nothing else to do and want to waste 90 minutes of your life that you will not be able to get back.

 The next film to review is "Ant-Man" starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas and  Evangeline Lily.

Plot

"Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world".
 
My Thoughts

I will be the first to say I do not know much about Ant-Man's history/Lore I was never into him really as a hero, I was hesitant on what to expect from this film, (from Ant-Man in general to Paul Rudd being cast as the Lead), I decided after seeing the trailer that I would give this film a chance. After seeing the film this past weekend I can say that the film was definitely different, Not in a bad way but comparing it to most of the past marvel films it had a different feel overall and I can say it was refreshing for the most part. What I mean by different compared to most of the other marvel films is that this film does not take itself seriously one bit, there are plenty of comedic moments (with the best ones Performed by Micheal Pena who played Luis, he was awesome in this role) that overall made the film pretty funny and entertaining, The acting overall was solid Paul Rudd was Decent as Scott Lang a father who is down on his luck and just trying to make a living that would make his daughter proud of him, Micheal Douglass for me did the best acting Job in this film which shouldn't be that surprising considering his pedigree, he played Hank Pym who in the marvel comic universe is usually Ant-Man in this film he played more of a mentor role for Paul Rudd's character, other than that the rest of the cast did a solid job and no actor was terrible in the film (I will also mention that there was a cameo by one of the avengers which was entertaining). Another aspect of this film that separates from most of the other marvel films is the lack of action, for the most part this film focused on developing the characters and the story first and foremost and didn't throw in a lot of big action sequences especially early in the film, towards the climax and he end of the film there was a bit more action, but if you are someone who just enjoys a lot of action with little story this film is not for you it focused on the characters and the story and for me while it was a change of pace from other marvel films for the most part I enjoyed the direction this film took,The story was solid It played out well it had a few cliches in it but overall the story wasn't bad and I enjoyed it. The special effects in this film where good and what you would expect from a marvel film, what really stood out to me was the special effects of the ant's they looked so lifelike and real, it was really well done and I commend the special effects studio that worked on this movie for that fact alone. There was not much about this film I really disliked other than some of the cliched parts that you could see coming as the film played out, I will add that those of you who are familiar with Ant-Man may not see these as cliches and that maybe how the story plays out in the comics, but for me it was a negative. Rotten Tomatoes  gave this film a 79% saying " Led by a charming performance from Paul Rudd, Ant-Man offers Marvel thrills on an appropriately smaller scale -- albeit not as smoothly as its most successful predecessors". I agree overall with this Paul Rudd was solid in his performance and seeing the actions sequences play out on a small scale was really entertaining to see. Overall this film was good and I am glad that I took a chance on it even though I knew nothing really about this character, I am interested to see how Ant-Man will fit into the marvel universe in the coming films.

My Thoughts

Overall solid film, I recommend to any marvel fans or Fans of Ant-Man 7.8/10!!!!

June 2015!!!

The month of June brings  two films to review, first we have Insidious:Chapter 3 starring Lin Shaye, Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott.

Plot 

"A prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity".

My Thoughts

The Original "Insidious" (read review here  is on my list for best horror films I have seen in the last 10 years (along with "The Cabin In The Woods" "Sinister" "The Conjuring" and "Mama") Insidious Chapter 2 was a solid film (read review here Insidious Chapter 2) and really got me excited for the inevitable Chapter 3, I was surprised to see that Chapter 3 would be a prequel, the reason being is I waned to see what got Elise (played by Lin Shaye) so scared at the end of the second film ( I have my theories on that). But after thinking about I became really intrigued to see a prequel, I saw it  as a chance to give us more background information on Elise's character, after seeing the film I can say that this was a very good addition to the Insidious franchise, While its not a classic like the first film, and overall not better then the second film, this movie was still very good and  I enjoyed it. with prequels I really like it when they link to events that happen in the films that are set after it, and this film did that very well, there are many references in this film that we know how they play out in the other two film, but it was pretty cool to see the references done right. The acting in this film was pretty good I will say that Lin Shaye did a very good job in her portrayal as Elise the psychic from the first two films who helped the Lambert family, she was very mysterious in this film compared to her character in the first two films, it really added to the overall experience of how the film was presented and if there is a fourth film I really hope her character continues on as I see her as a staple in these films now and couldn't imagine seeing an "Insidious" film without her. the rest of the cast did solid jobs,I will say that the character of Quinn 9played by Stefanie Scott) for me was a little annoying at times for me, she was a teenager and as we all know teenagers can be very annoying at times, if you look at it hat way she did a masterful job, I didn't look at it that way and how her character handled certain situations made me scratch my head, but overall she was okay and not the worst performance I have seen. Everyone else in the film was solid and it was nice to see how Elise (Lin Shaye),Specks (Leigh Whannel) and Tucker (Angus Sampson) met each other and joined forces for partnership that has been in all three films. The setting of this film felt very similar to the first two films, which for me was a good thing there was a very good sense of familiarity which can be lost when switching directors for the first time, One aspect of the insidious series that I really liked is  that this film did not rely on Jump Scares as a lot of other horror films, I feel it takes more effort to scare someone with buildup and not random flashes of something scary, This series does have its jump scare moments but it does not solely rely on them and Chapter 3 kept that going, "The Further" kept its eerie creepiness going,I love the way tho other side is portrayed in these film series. I had no major gripes overall with the film but i did feel that there are some aspects of Elise past that I still want to know that were not answered yet and I hope in the next film that these can be answered. Another gripe I had with the film was it just wasn't as scary as the other films in the series, maybe it had more to do with the person being haunted in this film was a teenager and not a child as with the Lambert family, the film had its moments but overall I would put the first two films above it in that respect. Rotten Tomatoes  gave this film a 61% saying "Insidious: Chapter 3 isn't as terrifying as the original, although it boasts surprising thematic depth and is enlivened by another fine performance from Lin Shaye". I agree with it not being as scary as the first two films, and that Lin Shaye was great in her role, but I feel the score was pretty low. This was a very good entry into the Insidious and has me ready for a part Four.

Very good prequel, Very good entry into the "Insidious" Series, I recommend if you are a fan of the "Insidious" Series or a fan of horror films in general. 7.5/10!!!!


The Next film to review is "Jurassic World" Starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and  Vincent D'Onofrio.

Plot

"Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor's interest, which backfires horribly".

My Thoughts

The original Jurassic Park for me was a classic, I like many others put that film in an iconic place in our memories, The Lost World and Jurassic Park III for me where not as good as the original and left much to be desired. When news of Jurassic Worlds development first broke a few years ago, I was somewhat skeptical at first, this was mainly due to the previous two films that came out after the original, But when I heard that this film would ignore the previous two films my outlook greatly changed on it. After viewing the film would I say its better than the original I would say "No" but is it the second best film in the series I would say "Yes". The film captured the Bigger than Life feel that dinosaurs movies should have, the film is set 22 years after the events of the first film and by this time the theme park fro the original has grown massively and people are no longer in such awe of dinosaurs as in the previous films, the basic plot setup of this movie is that the park wants to create a totally new dinosaur that will scare and shock the new park goers as no new dinosaur before, that is all I will say of the plot it takes off from there. Overall the plot as it plays out is decent and works well with the pacing of the film, I will say though that some of the attempts by certain characters to be funny or make light of certain situations didn't really work for me. The acting in this film was okay nothing spectacular and  I want to single out the two main actors of this film, first Bryce Dallas Howard's portrayal as Claire her character runs the everyday operations of the park, I have to say her performance for me was underwhelming overall especially when it came to the emotional scenes in the film, she just didn't show enough emotion and it looked to me like she had a hard time showing emotion, I am not sure if that was how her character was meant to be played as someone who does not like to display emotion, If that is what was intended then a marvelous job was done, if that wasn't the intention her performance was sub par in that regard other than that Bryce Dallas Howard did a good job in the other aspects of her performance. The other performance I wanted to mention was Chris Pratt, I know he has gotten a Ton of Buzz since "Guardians Of The Galaxy" and he was solid in that film, but his performance here Just didn't do it for me, starting with his attempts to be funny with one liners and sarcasm, some of the jokes worked but more often than not for me it just didn't come off right and made him seem like a Douche to me. The special effects in this movie to me overall fell short of my expectations, One aspect of the original Film that I really liked was the use of Animatronics when it came tot he dinosaurs it really made them look much more lifelike, that is where "Jurassic World" I felt got it wrong they went the CG route and it caused the dinosaurs to me to look really glossy and you could tell that they where not real or lifelike looking, there was only one scene in the Entire film that Animatronics was used and I felt this should have been used more to give the dinosaurs a much more lifelike view. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 70% saying "Jurassic World can't match the original for sheer inventiveness and impact, but it works in its own right as an entertaining -- and visually dazzling -- popcorn thriller". I agree overall with this, the film is not better than the original as I mentioned earlier but it is the second best film in the series and it is entertaining overall and works as a summer blockbuster. this film I recommend to see if your a fan of the Jurassic park series and want to see a film that is a direct continuation of the original "Jurassic Park" or if you are in the mood to see a Summer Blockbuster that will entertain you for two hours.

May 2015!!!!

For the Month of May we have four movies to review the first being Avengers:Age Of Ultron starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.

Plot

"When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and it is up to the Avengers to stop the villainous Ultron from enacting his terrible plans".

My Thoughts

The First "Avengers" Film for me was a good film but not the best "Marvel" Film of all time for me it was "X2" after seeing "Avengers:Age Of Ultron" "X2" is still the top film for me. Let me say that I was actually somewhat disappointed with Age of Ultron, one of my favorite aspects of the original Avengers was the subtle simplicity of the film there was no huge convoluted story line or multiple story lines intertwined in the film, Avengers was a blockbuster superhero mash up done right, Age of Ultron to me did all of these aspects wrong, first off I felt the plot of the film was not very good and was needlessly complicated at times there are some love story aspects thrown in there to boot, which for me always ruins any superhero movie for the most part, Superhero films for me should be action first everything else second unless the film is an origin story where some character development and back story is needed to establish the base of the film, Age of ultron's story for me was just all over the place, there was too much going on for me, The acting was solid and what I have come to expect from this group of Actors (I was happy that Hawkeye did have a larger role in this film compared to the first, And I will also add that James Spader stole the show as Ultron) he was awesome in his role he had a very good sense of humility and charm to him even though the character was a robot, By the end of the film I can honestly say that I was rooting for Ultron to win even though this goes against the entire film I can say this was one of the few super hero films I wanted the bad guy to win, James spader was that good as Ultron.The special effects were top notch and the quality was of hat I expected from a movie of this Budget, The action was another part of the film that for me fell short, Compared to the first film the action just didn't meet my expectations in terms of the enemies that they faced and the amount of action films as well, another gripe I had with the action was the final battle scene to me paled in comparison to the final battle in the first film.Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 75% saying "Exuberant and eye-popping, Avengers: Age of Ultron serves as an overstuffed but mostly satisfying sequel, reuniting its predecessor's unwieldy cast with a few new additions and a worthy foe". Overall I agree mostly with this score the film was beautiful and had great effects but the overall package when coupled with the lackluster fight scenes and the disappointing plot just made this film fall below my expectations.

I was expecting better than the final product, First film better overall in my opinion 7.3/10!!!!



The next film for review is Mad Max:Fury Road" starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult.

"In a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, two rebels just might be able to restore order: Max, a man of action and of few words, and Furiosa, a woman of action who is looking to make it back to her childhood homeland".

My Thoughts


"Masterpiece" "One of the best films of the last 20 years" "Top Ten Film of the year" those are some of the descriptions I found when reading reviews about "Mad Max:Fury Road". needles to say this really raised my expectations for the film after hearing some of the hype words being thrown around about the film. I can say I wasn't a huge fan of the original films even though I understand their cult status as of today. After having now viewed the film I can say that while it was a solid film, it was in no way in my opionion a "Masterpiece" or "One of the best films of the last 10 years" that is not to say the film was bad, it was a solid film that I mostly enjoyed and would recommend to view at least once. The setting of this film is very similar to the original films, set in a desert laden futuristic wasteland where there is not much hope for life and where everyday people fight with each other over the simplest of things. The acting for me was okay nothing great but solid, Tom Hardy recently has become one of my more appreciated actors, I have seen him in a few movies recently and for me it is coming to a point where I am expecting great performances out of him regularly now, I have to say I was somewhat disappointed with his role as the title character in this film, it wasn't that his performance was bad but the script to me underutilized his talents, for most of the film Tom Hardy didn't have many speaking lines and made more of a grunting noise throughout most of the film, even in his speaking roles he still sounded like a neanderthal and I could barely understand him I put that more on the script and how they wanted the lines delivered than on Mr.Hardy's shoulders overall, Charlize Theron played the character of Furiosa who over the course of the film to me became the central character to the story, Her performance was very good  but for me this film should have been called Mad Max"Furiosa's way, it honestly felt like her movie once her character was introduces, there is nothing wrong with Furiosa becoming a central figure the the film but it was basically her film and I felt Mad Max was an afterthought once her story arc started to get going. The rest of the cast did a solid job and there weren't any really bad performances in the film, the special effects in this film where awesome and some of the best I have seen this year in a film, there is a particular scene during a desert storm that is jaw dropping and was beautiful to look at. I will say for anyone thinking of seeing this film do not see in 3D, as most films nowadays the 3D is post processed and there was only once scene I could make out where the 3Dactually worked pretty well. Rotten Tomatoes Gave this film a 98% saying "With exhilarating action and a surprising amount of narrative heft, Mad Max: Fury Road brings George Miller's post-apocalyptic franchise roaring vigorously back to life". While there was a good amount of action in the film, and the story was easy to follow and made sense, I jsut left the theater with a feeling that this film should not have had the "Mad Max" title to it as I mentioned earlier if this film was titled "Mad Max"Furiosa's way" the film's story would have made much more sense, this was still a solid film and I do recommend it, but by no means in my opinion is this film a "Masterpiece" solid film though.

The next film for review is "Poltergeist"  starring Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie Dewitt and Saxon Sharbino.

 Plot

"A family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces must come together to rescue their youngest daughter after the apparitions take her captive".

My Thoughts

I was a pretty big fan of the original "poltergeist" Film, for its time it was nicely done and is a horror film that I frequent and always enjoy it when I do. When news of a remake was first announced I was pretty apprehensive, I didn't really see a need to reboot the franchise, it has its place in time and I would say leave it there no need to modernize it,  After seeing the film my apprehension was correct, this film was overall not very good, lets start off first with a PG-13 rating, my general rule of thumb when it comes to any horror movie is to make it rated R, anything less and you get a marginalized horror film that feels like there could have been more done to try and scare the audience in my opinion. This film had that feeling to me, the film tried to do the whole jump scare tactic and for me it just didn't work at all, most of the attempted scares by the film, you could see coming a mile away and by the time the scare came you knew it was there and no surprises  or something you didn't expect to see, The acting in this film was really a letdown the main  cast is headlined by Sam Rockwell, who I have seen in a few films prior t o this (most notably The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy as the character Zaphod) and generally he had done well in the films I have seen him in, this film was not one of them, his performance as the Father Eric was probably the worst performance in a role I have seen this year, his character was really sarcastic especially in the beginning of the film, showed no empathy with his children until basically the end of the film and even then it looked forced, and overall I didn't enjoy his character one bit, I am always reluctant to put it solely on the actor in situations like these as it comes down sometimes to the script and how the director wants the lines delivered, but in this case I have to put some on Mr.Rockwell some of the facial expressions and lines that he delivered in this film where cringe worthy, the rest of the cast didn't do any better another annoying standout for me was Griffin the son in the family played by Kyle Catlett I have not seen a more whiny character in a long time, I understand his role was that of a 10 year old boy but he whined about everything and halfway through the film whenever his character had a scene I was really tempted to just look the other way and on a couple of occasion I actually did but could still hear his character whine about something else, if the intention of the director was to convey a whiny 10 year old boy then he did that job in spades and deserves a gold star, there where no good performances in this film from an acting standpoint, which is disappointing usually in lower budget films the actors usually carry the films, this was not the case here. The other huge gripe I had with this film was THE CG, it is 2015 and the CG in this film really felt Like I was watching a film from 2005 , Honestly the CG was so bad that it was like they didn't even try, you could easily spot out what was CG, I honestly would have preferred if the went the route of the original film and used animatronics and it would have looked better. the only part of this film that I actually liked was the story staying true mostly to the original that was nice to see and I appreciated that. Rotten Tomatoes 
gave this film a 33% saying "Paying competent homage without adding anything of real value to the original Poltergeist, this remake proves just as ephemeral (but half as haunting) as its titular spirit". I agree somewhat the film honestly didn't add anything different to the original but I preferred it that way and it comes back around to what I said earlier thsi film was not needed and shouldnt have been made.

Staying true to the original was the only thing this film did right, otherwise bad film and not worth seeing. 6.5/10!!!!!


The last film tot review for the month of May is "San Andreas" starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Carla Gugino and  Paul Gimatti.

Plot

"In the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California, a rescue-chopper pilot makes a dangerous journey across the state in order to rescue his daughter".


My Thoughts

Disaster films are one of my favorite type of "Genres" I would say the main reason I like this type of film would be down to the feeling that for the most part a film were mother nature decides to fight back is something that could actually happen in real life. A tornado, or a Hurricane or in the case of "San Andreas" are all totally possible and could strike at any time. When I first heard about this movie I was hooked, I have never seen a really good "Earthquake" Natural disaster film so for me this was a chance to cross that type of disaster film off my list, When I heard that "The Rock" was going to star in it, I knew I would see this film as soon as it came out. After seeing the film I would say that it was "Solid" and met my expectations overall. First off I will say that "The Rock" was easily the best part of this film, he has really come a long way since "The Mummy Returns" back in 2001 and is now one of my favorite actors, he did a really good job playing the father who is going through a divorce from his wife (Gugino) while trying to deal wit his daughter (Alex Daddario) growing up and getting ready for college and dealing with a great personal tragedy that really helps the viewer understand the character more later in the film. he showed a great range especially with his emotions in this film and it was nice to see he has that acting ability. the rest of the cast for me was pretty underwhelming, Carla Gugino did an okay job playing the ex-wife of "The Rock's" Character but for me overall she didn't really have much presence and kind of felt like she was "just along for the ride". Alexandra Daddario, while a very pretty girl is for me not a very good actress I have seen her in a few roles over the years and every time I just got the impression that she was just a "pretty face" to fill a role, and that was the case again in this film, her scenes weren't terrible but her character didn't really have much substance to it , I would even go as far to say her character had less of an impact than Gugiono's character, the only significant role that Alexandra Daddario's character played was that she was the whole reason that "The Rock's" character to trek across the state of California to save her. Now onto the real reason to see Disaster Films the destruction, "The Day After Tommorrow" is my favorite Disaster film overall, I will say that "San Andreas" overtakes that film in the destruction department, this film for the most part is non stop action,destruction mayhem and that is what I really liked about it, the CG was very well done and was hard to differentiate from real shots, some of the views that were shown were breathtaking and easily the best I have ever seen from a disaster movie by far if you are a fan of destruction and non stop action you will love this aspect for the film. Being from California it was interesting to see how this film was done and it  was nice to see that the film captured Northern and Southern California Perfectly, it was interesting to see landmarks such as AT&T Park being destroyed having actually seen the stadium in person, an earthquake to native Californians is a natural disaster that we had all experienced before and the threat was very real, I experienced my fair share of earthquakes, luckily nothing on this magnitude. RottenTomatoes gave the film a 49% saying "San Andreas has a great cast and outstanding special effects, but amidst all the senses-shattering destruction, the movie's characters and plot prove less than structurally sound". I agree mostly with what was said, the cast on paper did look great but as I mentioned earlier overall other than "The Rock" it was underwhelming, the special effects were awesome and some of the best I have seen in recent memeory and for the most part the plot was pretty weak but made sense for the type of film it was. Overall this was a solid film that is worth seeing at least once, if you are a fan of "The Rock" or of Natural Disaster films then I reccomend it.

April 2015!!!

April brings with it two films to review the first being Unfriended starring Heather Sossaman, Matthew Bohrer and Courtney Halverson.

Plot-"A group of online chat room friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend".

My Thoughts -In the horror film genre, there are so many films to watch that most of the time films that could potentially be great are often overlooked usually because there are some any horror films that is impossible to keep track of them, where I feel more horror films should do is be unique and bring something tot he table that most films in the same genre either overlook or do not execute properly, I was a huge fan of the Movie "Cloverfield" I really liked the plot and the story and the setting of this film, what really hooked me was that it was a found footage film that was shown through the eyes of the camera that was with a group of new yorkers that where trying to deal with a Monster attack for me that was the first horror film i saw of that type, that film came out in 2008, while I have seen a few films that where similar in style to that film after a while that style also became over used and predictable. Going into seeing Unfriended I honestly did not know what to expect, but What made me feel like giving the film a shot and actually seeing it was that it was given a "R" rating if this film was "PG-13" I would have skipped it. After seeing the film I can say that I am glad That I gave this film it a chance, it was a very solid film, the acting was nothing spectacular but it did not need to be the film focused on a group of teenagers, and for what was expected of them the cast did very well. the plot was nothing ground breaking (teenager bullied online commits suicide, takes revenge thorough online means) but the way that the film was presented and the underlying message behind it was what really spoke to me, the film is depicted entirely through  a skype call which for me was genius it was  something I have not seen in any movie let alone a horror movie, what I meant by the underlying message is this film has a heavy social media tone which is central to a lot of peoples lives nowadays so most people will be able to relate to the film the other underlying point central the the plot is online bullying which is a really problem that happens to people everyday it was really good idea to have these factors be central to the story adds it really hits home for most of us. and with how the film played it it was really engaging with that angle. The film is not perfect for me it was a little on the short side (1 hour and 20 minutes), some of the situations that the group experience can have a cause of over acting which was annoying at points and lastly the ending scene not the ending but the ending scene was a bit "cheesy". Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 64% saying " Unfriended subverts found-footage horror clichés to deliver a surprisingly scary entry in the teen slasher genre with a technological twist." I disagree with this score I thought this film was very good and the reason why would be the way this film was presented was just so different to me that it really drew me in, and the the two central points behind the film are very active in today's culture that it  will connect with a lot of people. Overall I enjoyed this film and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see a horror film done differently than most recent horror films.

The last Film to review in April is "Child 44" Starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman.

Plot

"A disgraced member of the military police investigates a series of nasty child murders during the Stalin-era Soviet Union".

My Thoughts

I must say that initially this film was not a film, I had a lot of expectations form, After seeing the film I am glad that  I had my expectations low I do not mean this in a bad way, I was pleasantly surprised by this film it was actually a decent Film, it was set in 1950's Stalin era Russia where order is the most important aspect of everyday life those who question the status quo usually end up "Dead", the main premise of this film is built around someone murdering children whic his impossible and cant happen in Russia as the saying i nthe film goes "there is no murder in paradise". The acting in this film was very good led by Tom Hardy's Performance as Leo, I will admit I have not seen many Tom Hardy films but after seeing him in this role I will be on the lookout for  him in future roles, Noomi Rapace was solid as Raisa who was Leo's wife she did a great job of conveying that her character was hiding something from her doting husband and was really convincing in her role, Gary Oldman was also solid in this film and overall the cast did a very good job and I had no huge complaints in that regard. The setting and pace of the film fit well together the film really did make you feel like this was 1950's Russia. TYhere was no use ofg special effects which is always a good sing for a fgilm based on the past.  One complaint I did have wit hthe film was some of the dialogue, certain scenes did feel as though they where not needled and added nothing to the story and were just filler scenes which did case the film to be a bit boring at times and with the film being 127 minutes long this did become a problem. Another aspect of the film I did not like which maybe historically accurate and not really a fault with the film but the Russian people, certain points in the film some of the characters are were so oblivious that they could not notice certain key points to the film staring them right in the face and the character would blatantly deny any recollection of these situations even happened, the characters always had t his "Russia is always right it can do no wrong" and I understand that this may have been how Russia was back then, and if so I felt really sad for the people of Russia, again this maybe historically accurate but for me it got annoying after awhile with the blatant missteps. Rotten Tomatoes  gave the film a 25% saying "There's a gripping story at the heart of Child 44 and a solid performance from Tom Hardy in the lead, but it all still adds up to a would-be thriller that lacks sufficient thrills". Overall I agree with that was said here the story for the film was very good and to watch it play out was very interesting for the most part, as I mentioned earlier Tom Hardy was awesome as well and his performance out shown everyone else in the film. Overall this was a decent film that weas well acted and for the most part wasd  intruguign and engaging trought the entire runtime, it had its falws but I am glad that I saw this film and recommend it not highly but as a decent film.

March 2015!!

The month of March brings with it two movies to review the first being "Chappie" Starring Sharlito Copley, Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman.

Plot

"n the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself".

My Thoughts

I will be the first to say that this film was not high on my watch list, even though I was a fan Niell Blopkamp's of "District 9" and an even bigger fan of "Elysium" i wasn't to excited to see "Chappie" once I saw the trailer I was a little more intrigued to see the film but still not overly excited, eventually I decided to watch the film. Now after seeing the film I am very glad that I took the chance and saw this film, this was a very good film, one of the better films I have seen in the last few years, what really got me with this film was the emotional undertones especially involving "Chappie", it was really mind blowing to see this robot grow up before the viewers eyes, like a child over the course of the film "Chappie" Matures and things and learns a lot of lessons along the way it was a sight to behold on how much interactions with Humans with both good and bad intentions shaped "Chappie" throughout the film, I will say Sharlito Copley did a solid job voicing "Chappie" is accent did start to annoy me after a bit but the film was based in South Africa and it fit in with everyone else voices very well just combining a robot voice with a south African dialect was a little harsh at some points. the rest of the cast did a very good job Hugh Jackman was very good in his role as Vincent Moore the rival to Dev Patel's character Deon Wilson, I honestly didn't really like Dev Patel's Character he just wasn't all that interesting and I found him to be very wooden in his acting overall (not much emotion). The stand out for me in terms of the cast was Yo-Landi Visser who played the role of "Yolandi" she played the sort of "Mommy" role to "Chappie" and she was excellent, I had never heard of her before and did some research and this was her firs acting role (other than some documentaries) I was really impressed with her overall ,she showed a great deal of emotion in the film and by the end of the film she was probably my favorite character, the only problem I had was it was sometimes hard to understand what she was saying as she had a very heavy South African accent but for the most part I could understand what she was saying. The special effects in the film were also very good especially with the Robots they looked very lifelike and blended in perfectly with the real life backdrop, I was very impressed with how good the special effects in this film where.The common theme that "Chappie" "Elysium" and "District 9" all seems to have is that they are set in South Africa but its a desolate type of South Africa, one where violence is rampant, people are struggling to survive day to day and humanity is on the brink, from some of the reviews I have read on all three of these films, critics seem to dislike this same undertone in all of the films as they feel, it makes it to easy for the director to just keep recycling this same backdrop and just change the story they want something fresh, I do not mind this vision of South Africa and as long as it works keep running with it, Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 29% saying "Chappie boasts more of the big ideas and visual panache that director Neill Blomkamp has become known for -- and, sadly, more of the narrative shortcomings". I disagree with this, the story for me didn't have many shortcomings and was fairly entertaining and interesting, Overall this was a very good film and I am glad that I took the chance to watch this and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of "District 9" or "Elysium".

The next film to review is "Run All Night" Starring Liam Neeson, Ed Harris and Joel Kinnanman.

My Thoughts

By now most people who read my reviews know that I am fan of Liam Neeson, especially some of his more recent roles (Taken 1-3, Unknown, Non-Stop, The Grey) when I saw the trailer for this movie I knew I would see this movie, Liam Neeson is brilliant in these roles and knows how to play them perfectly. After seeing the film, my honest reaction to the entire film was "Average" what I mean by that is the film was a decent movie, the acting was solid overall (no standouts Liam Neeson did what I expected of him in this role). there was a decent amount of action to keep the viewer interested, but even after all of that I still felt that the movie was just "Average" nothing special happened, nothing bad happened either but the movie just kind of wen through the motions. there was nothing that happened in the film that really shocked me or had me say to myself "that was an awesome scene" it was just a collection of cliches so to speak, everything that happened in the film I kind of saw coming once the film played out fully. I want to ad the film was not terrible by any stretch it had its moments and overall was a solid action film, that I would recommend to someone who wanted to see a film but had no idea what to watch and they wanted a suggestion for a action film to see. And I would also add Liam Neeson has still got it, he is so good at these movies that I honestly do not want to see him play any other roles during his acting career, and judging by his most recent films he feels the same way, he kept the film interesting for me if any other actor had to play this role in the exact way that it played out this would have been a terrible film in my opinion, he just knows how to play these characters and play them well.Rotten Tomatoes Gave the film a 60& saying " Liam Neeson is in typically fine form, but Run All Night suffers from a convoluted plot and workmanlike execution". I overall agree the plot for this film can be confusing and downright boring at times even rotten tomatoes had to acknowledge how good Liam Neeson was in this film and I also agree with that. Overall if you are afan Of Liam Neeson or want to see a decent but not great Action film I would see this.

February 2015!!!!

The Month of February brings with it two films to review the first being Kingsman: The Secret Service starring Colin Firth, Samuel L Jackson and Mark Strong.

Plot

"A spy organization recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program, just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius".

My Thoughts



A lot of the early reviews i read about this film where that it was "a more action packed James Bond", those words may catch the attention of a lot of people, but for me I am not a huge James Bind fan (Pierce Brosnan was my favorite bond if I had to choose.) so those words meant nothing to me. Initially I was a little hesitant about this film, as I just didn't know much about the source material and after seeing the trailer, i still felt I did not know enough about the back story, but I gave the film a shot and after seeing the film I have to say, I am glad i watched it, this film was pretty good. The film is set in England and for how he film played out  and flowed together, England was the perfect choice, kings by default are considered gentleman and proper English tossed in with the British setting really made this film fit together very well. The cast for this film was a very good one, Colin Firth was excellent in the role of Harry Hart, the experienced British spy, he had a certain charm to him that really made his character like able even when he was killing many people all at one time, Taron Egerton was decent in his role of Eggsy the tough British street kid, who was just waiting for an opportunity to do something with his life, what i didn't like about the Eggsy character overall was that he was just so smug that it really rubbed me the wrong way and for me made the character unlikable. Samuel L Jackson was decent as the main villain in the film "Valentine" the only problem I had with his character was he had a lisp which made him as a  villain a littler harder to take seriously but overall he did a good job in a role he hardly plays anymore, the star of the film in terms of casting would have to go to Soifa Boutella as "Gazelle" it wasn't so much her acting in the role, but the way her character "dispatched' anyone who got in her way was awesome and really unique, the fight scene between her and Eggsy was a sight t behold and Gazelle is easily one of my fave "femme fatals" from recent memory. the rest of the cast did solid jobs and overall this was a  really good put together cast. The CGI in this film unfortunately was below par and it was really noticeable when it was used, this was disappointing as it took away from the film, and i expected more from a film of this caliber. The length of this film was 2 hours and i always say if a film is 2 hours it better be good and bot feel dull, boring and slow, this film started off slow but did pickup halfway through and once it did the length of the film didn't feel bad at all. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 73% saying "Stylish, subversive, and above all fun, Kingsman: The Secret Service finds director Matthew Vaughn sending up the spy genre with gleeful abandon". Overall I agree with what they are saying the film was very stylish, had its funny moments, once it got going was very action packed, had a very good cast an overall I would say if i had to classify this film, I would call it A less serious James Bond Film, what I mean by that for anyone who sees this film, will see start differences in the way this film does not take it self so seriously as the Bond films do, and I lied that approach overall.

Solid Film, Good cast that delivered an overall good experience, not perfect but a solid film that I enjoyed once it got going. 7.5/10!!!!



The Second and last next to Review is "Focus" Staring Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Rodrigo Santoro.

My Thoughts


Anyone who saw "After Earth" as I did probably thought to themselves "what did i just watch" when the film finished, I am a big Will Smith fan and have rarely seen him in a bad film or bad role after seeing "After Earth" that all changed that film checked both of those boxes for me me, When this film was announced and a read the plot for the first time I wasn't to sure what to think, I am not a big fan of romance films usually, but I did want to see what will smith could come up with after the monstrosity that was "After Earth" after seeing the film, I can say that Will Smith redeemed himself fully. I will start by saying the acting in this film was very good Will Smith was great as con man Nicky who has seen it all and knows all the tricks in the book, Margot Robbie who plays Nicky's Protege so to speak was decent in her role as Jess, to me her character felt mostly like eye candy but with not much substance, she did a solid job though and overall did not have much complaints with er role, I do want to give a special mention to Adrian Martinez for his portrayal of the character "Farhad" he was a nice comic relief in the film and i enjoyed all of the scenes he was in  the rest of the cast was solid as well and did a good job in making the roles they played believable. The pacing of this film was like a mountain to me, what I  I mean by that it is the film starts off slow (as if you are climbing up the mountain) then picks up (as if you are going down the mountain) then slows down again and et cetera, this led to the film not ever really get going it had its moments but never flowed together perfectly due to the stop start nature of the film, the film mostly takes place in New Orleans and Buenos Aires and I think these were great choices ans with the way the film played out these colorful, and very vibrant cities really played well with the film.As I mentioned earlier in the review I am not usually a huge romance film guy, but honestly this film wasn't bad at all and overall i enjoyed the film, There was a good chemistry between Smith and Robbies characters and for romance film that is always key, if the actors do not have a chemistry with each other then the performance es to me always feel wooden and forced, that was not the case here. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 57% saying " Focus may have a few too many twists and turns, but it nearly skates by on its glamorous setting and the charm of its stars." I agree mostly with this , i did think the film was trying to be to smart for its own good there are a lot of twists thrown in the film that felt like they where there just to  be there and did not really add anything to the film, overall this was a solid movie and it was nice to see will smith back in a good role.

January 2015!!!!

The first month of the new year brings with it two films to review the first being "Taken 3" Starring Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen.

Plot

"Ex-government operative Bryan Mills is accused of a ruthless murder he never committed or witnessed. As he is tracked and pursued, Mills brings out his particular set of skills to find the true killer and clear his name".

My Thoughts

I was a huge fan of Taken, it was awesome to see Liam Neeson in a role like that (and since he has played a lot of actions roles which he does a really good job at. Taken 2 for me was an Okay film nothing special but passable. hen taken 3 was announced I was really excited about making a new film to get the taste of Taken 2 out of my mouth, I was also hesitant, with the original taken idea there is only so much you can really do in terms of story. I will give taken 3 credit it actually made a decent plot for what the "taken" series usually focuses on. The idea of Liam Neeson running around trying to clear his name, with Inspector Franck Dotzler (Played Well by Forest Whitaker) following him ever step of the way waiting for Neeson's character to slip up. The pacing of the film felt to me a little slower than Taken and on par with Taken 2, what I mean by that is the film starts off pretty slow and doesn't really build up till about the 35-40 minute mark, once the film does build though the action is what you would expect from any of the taken films, I will say it was nice to have the film set in the United Stats (LA to e exact) in contrast to the previous two films that where set in Europe. The actin in this film was passable no one did a really great job in the s department, but this isn't a film where you would go in expecting Oscar worthy acting, the acting was passable for what the film was. the action scenes in the film for me where a little underwhelming a lot of the big scenes where kind of cliche to me (car chases, gunfights) what I liked about the taken films was the kind if stealthiness and subtle ness of some of the action sequences in this film that went out the window is was full boar and very visceral once it started going, I guess the director wanted to switch it up a bit this time around which for me wasn't a great choice. I really just am a huge Liam Nesson  in these types of roles and stepping back and taking this movie for what it was, it was a okay film and a decent entry into the series.Rotten Tomaotes gave the film a 11% saying " Hampered by toothless PG-13 action sequences, incoherent direction, and a hackneyed plot, Taken 3 serves as a clear signal that it's well past time to retire this franchise". I agree somewhat with what they said, I do agree that it is time to  hang up t he Taken Series, I don't think the movie was as bad as they make it out to be, it was an okay film and worth a watch, especially if you are a liam Nesson fan and also a fan of the Taken Series.

Decent film and a nice addition to the taken series, although nothing special and overall I feel that it is time to move on from the "taken" series it is worth a watch 7.1/10!!!.



The next and last film for the month of January is "Project Almaanc" Starring Jonny Weston, Sofia Black-D'Elia anSam Lerner.

Plot

"A group of teens discover secret plans of a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control".


My Thoughts.

Time travel is one of my favorite concepts to research (With space being my other favorite) when I read about this film I was hooked and knew I would see it as soon as the film came out. I can honestly say I have not seen to many good time travel films, So I was really looking forward to this film to see what direction the filmmakers would go for this film. When I also heard that this film would be a found footage film that really enticed me, this was anew way to do a time travel film (one of my favorite films Cloverfield was a found footage film and generally most found footage films I have seen have been very good). After finally seeing this film disappointment is what comes to mind, The film started off pretty good we get introduced to a group of teens who while trying to make a science project stumble upon blueprints to make a device which turns out to be a time machine. The cast for this film fit the criteria of high school teenagers, the acting by the cast overall was not very good (The whole cast was comprised of basically unknown actors, which is always a hit or miss in this instance to me it was a miss). there just was not much emotion shown by the actors in the scenes that required it and at some points of the film it just was not very convincing, The plot for me was also very weak once the time machine had been built the film really went downhill, I actually enjoyed the first 40-45 minutes of the film it had decent  feel to it and actually helped make a connection with the actors and their characters, once the time machine entered the story what really bothered me was the way the machine as used and the restrictions that where in place I felt really took from the overall aspect of having a time machine, To top it off there was a really long and I felt unnecessary portion of the film that I will say involves a concert that I felt was a hindrance to the overall feel of the film, this part of the film serves as a key portion to the overall story but I really felt it was boring and wished the climax to the film had a more interesting portion. Special effects for the film where nothing spectacular but passable and did a decent job for a film of this caliber. The film was 1 hour and 46 minutes long and honestly baring the climax concert portion the film flowed pretty well and didn't feel long, which for a movie of this type can be the case which thankfully it wasn't here.Rotten Tomatoes had this to say about the film " Project Almanac isn't without wit or originality, but its thin story and irritating found-footage camerawork ultimately make it difficult to recommend.". Overall I really liekd the idea of the film and the idea behingtime travel will always interest me, but this film fell short of what I was hoping would happen, the idea of it being a found footage film was nice touch, but the acting, the plot overall and certain scenes in the film left me wanting mor and getting less.
