February 2020!!

The Month of February Brings with it 5 films to review the first being one I have been looking forward to "Sonic The Hedgehog".

 Runtime:99 Minutes

Post Credit:1 pre credit and 1 post credit

Plot-"A cop in the rural town of Green Hills will help Sonic escape from the government who is looking to capture him".

Starring-Jim CarreyAdam Pally and James Marsden

My Thoughts

have seen some really bad movies recently and i was hopeful that this film would at least be decent. And I am happy to say this was the case. the nostalgia was thick in this film and I loved it, anyone who has played the games over the years since the 90's will see plenty of little Easter eggs dotted throughout the film. The acting was decent nothing spectacular (though it was nice to see Jim Carrey in a new role and his comic relief was well appreciated) the rest of the performances were good enough. The plot of the film made sense overall and the pacing was solid and kept me engaged through the run time which is always a plus.  Honestly it was just fun to see Sonic finally come to the big screen and I look forward to a sequel (fingers crossed) the really only down point for me was some of the jokes felt forced to me but other than that I wasn't disappointed. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 63% saying "Fittingly fleet and frequently fun, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy -- and a fine excuse for Jim Carrey to tap into the manic energy that launched his career". Overall this film was fun and entertaining and that's all i really wanted, any fans of the series or wanting to take the kids out over the weekend for a fun movie should see this.

Rating

Fun, Entertaining and was what I wanted 7.5/10!!!

The second film to review for the month of February is "Fantasy Island"

 Runtime:109 Minutes

Post Credit:None

Plot-"A horror adaptation of the popular '70s TV show about a magical island resort".

Starring-Portia DoubledayMaggie Q and Lucy Hale

My Thoughts

The drudge to the start of 2020 continues with "Fantasy Island" I was hoping this film would at least be somewhat entertaining, that as not the case at all. The film starts with us being introduced to the main cast who are all forgettable, the viewer is given some backstory on each but there is no real reason to make a connection with any of them or root for any throughout the film. from the start this film had the cheesy PG-13  horror film vibe I am all too familiar with, I should know better by this point but I still go in hopefully that one day a PG-13 horror film will be decent. The acting was typical for this type of movie (no terrible performances) the plot was somewhat interesting in theory more than how it actually played out during the run time, it was mostly boring and nothing really excited happened, the only somewhat shocking thing was the twist ending, but other than that this film was so far the worst I have seen this year (which is saying a lot)  this movie is forgettable on so many levels Rotten Tomatoes  gave this film a 10% saying "Fantasy Island tries to show audiences the dark side of wish fulfillment, but mainly serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of exhuming long-dead franchises". I agree this film should have never been made.

Rating

Worst Movie I have seen so far 3.0/10!!!

The third film to review is "The Lodge".

Runtime:108 Minutes

Post Credit:None

Plot-"A soon-to-be stepmom is snowed in with her fiancé's two children at a remote holiday village. Just as relations begin to thaw between the trio, some strange and frightening events take place".

Starring-Richard Armitage , Alicia Silverstone and Riley Keough

My Thoughts

This film came onto my radar late into the game but I am glad i gave it a chance and decided to see it.  the film from the get go has a very tense and claustrophobic feel to it which sets the tone really well. the acting was very good in this film which special mention to Riley Keough who did a fantastic job transitioning from eager fiance to deranged religious fanatic by the end, it was a very good performance, the rest of the cast did a good job as well. the plot of the film kept me engaged throughout and was tense and always had a nice jump scare to keep the audience interested when the film felt like it was becoming predictable in a sense. I will say I wasn't a huge fan of the ending and it did take away from the entire movie for me, but that is always a subjective topic otherwise I had no complaints with how the film played out. Rotten Tomatoes  gave the film a 72% saying "Led by an impressive Riley Keough performance, The Lodge should prove a suitably unsettling destination for fans of darkly atmospheric horror". I agree that the film for some maybe hard to sit through there is a darkness about it which for me was perfect but its nto for everyone but for those that can sit through this film, they will be treated to a very good movie.

Rating

Very good film, other than a so so ending I highly recommend 8.0/10!!

The fourth film to review for the month is "Brahms:The Boy II".

Runtime:86 Minutes

Post Credit:None

Plot-"After a family moves into the Heelshire Mansion, their young son soon makes friends with a life-like doll called Brahms".

Starring-Katie HolmesRalph Ineson and Owain Yeoman

My Thoughts

I was not a fan of the original film at all and this film was even worse. I will spend no time on this film do not watch under ANY circumstances, it literally did not need to be made it was as sequel to a film that no one wanted. the plot was terrible. just skip it please. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 10% saying "More likely to induce boredom than quicken the pulse, Brahms: The Boy II is chiefly scary for the way it undermines the effectiveness of its above-average predecessor". I agree wholeheartedly the film was boring and i will leave it at that, this film is not worth discussing it was terrible and I do not recommend for anyone.

Rating

Terrible worst movie I have seen this year (will be happy when february is over been saying that too much this month) 3.0/10!!

The last film to review for the month is "The Invisible Man".

Runtime:124 Minutes

Post Credit:None

Plot-"When Cecilia's abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see".

Starring-Elisabeth MossAldis Hodge and Oliver Jackson-Cohen

My Thoughts

I went into this film with not many expectations and that may have been the best way to approach this. this film was probably the best I saw for February (which isn't saying much but still). Starting with the acting there was not a bad performance anywhere in the film and Elisabeth Moss  did an amazing job as the lead in this film, it was one of the better performances I have seen in recent memory and hope she gets some recognition in some way. The plot in this film wasn't exactly anything we haven't seen before (battered spouse seeks to get away from the abuser) the wrinkle in this film was the invisible aspect and it really made this film, throughout the over 2 hour run time the film makers did a marvelous job convincing the viewer that Cecilia was going crazy when in reality she was being tormented we just don't know by whom. The film had a very tense and dark feel to it which was right up my alley and I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere the film had from start to finish. There was not much about this film I did not like, the ending for me was a bit of letdown but other than that i cant find too much wrong with this film. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 90% saying "Smart, well-acted, and above all scary, The Invisible Man proves that sometimes, the classic source material for a fresh reboot can be hiding in plain sight". I agree with it all except the film, being scary but that comes down to personal opinion and I see way too many horror films to be scared anymore, but there are some well timed ump scares that could get some, this was a really good film which exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend for fans of thrillers.

Veyr good film, well acted, tense and dark. highly recommend 8.7/10!!!

January 2020!!

Happy New Year!  The first month of the new year brings 5 movies to review the first being "The Grudge".

Runtime:94 Minutes

Post Credit-None

Plot-"A house is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms those who enter it with a violent death".

Starring-Tara WestwoodJunko Bailey and David Lawerence Brown

My Thoughts

I didn't mind the Original American grudge version so I was interested to see this film and how it play out 16 years later. I can say this film was pretty bad and I recommend for no one to see this even horror fans,. This film being rated R gave me hope that there would at least be some really good gore kills but even those fell flat. The plot was mediocre and boring the acting was passable but nothing spectacular by anyone involved. I will not spend any more time talking about this film. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 18% saying "Dull and derivative, the rebooted Grudge wastes a talented cast and filmmaker on watered-down scares that may leave viewers nursing grievances of their own". I agree this film is forgettable and I urge anyone thinking of seeing this film to pass.

Rating

Forgettable film do not recommend for anyone 5.0/10!!

The next film to Review is "Underwater".

Runtime:95 Minutes

Post Credit-None

Plot-"A crew of aquatic researchers work to get to safety after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory. But the crew has more than the ocean seabed to fear".

Starring-Kristen StewartT.J. Miller and Jessica Henwick

My Thoughts

I wasn't sure what to think of this movie when I first saw the trailer but it interested me. Now having seen the film I can say that it wasn't very good. the premise of the film on the surface was enticing but the execution could have been planned out better. The acting in thew film was probably the best aspect of this film, there were not any weak performances among the main cast and I can say Kristen Stewart was actually pretty good in this. the pacing of the film wasn't bad either it kept a very claustrophobic feeling which went well with this film in the way it was presented. Where this film really lost me was the ending and the monsters, honestly this film would have been better without the monster element/ that part of the film felt sandwiched in and don't get me started on the big reveal it ruined the film for me and I am not sure why the film makers went this way.Rotten Tomatoes  gave this film a 51% saying "Underwater's strong cast and stylish direction aren't enough to distract from the strong sense of dĂ©jĂ  vu provoked by this claustrophobic thriller's derivative story. I agree overall this film could have been much better but too many miss steps along the way ruined the movie.

Rating

Could have been so much better,Solid acting doesn't save everything else 5.2/10!!!

The third film to review is one I have been looking forward to "Bad Boys for life".

Runtime:124 Minutes

Post Credit-None

Plot-"The Bad Boys Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are back together for one last ride in the highly anticipated Bad Boys for Life".

Starring-Will SmithMartin Lawrence and Vanessa Hudgens

 My Thoughts

I was a fan of the original Bad Boys not so much of Bad Boys II I was eagerly looking forward tot he long anticipated third film in the franchise and I can say it was worth the wait. Martin Lawrence  and Will Smith still have that great Connection and were just as funny playing off each other, the plot of the film flowed well and kept me engaged throughout. The ending does setup a forth film which I would gladly welcome. I don't have to much to say about this film, it was really enjoyable and a great action film,. that I highly recommenced.  Rotten Tomatoes  gave the film a 77% saying "Loaded up with action and a double helping of leading-man charisma, Bad Boys for Life reinvigorates this long-dormant franchise by playing squarely to its strengths". I agree the film brigns back the feeling of the original Bad boys

Rating

I highly recommend this film for fans of action or the bad boys franchise, it was very entertaining. 8.2/10!!

The fourth film to review is "The Turning".

Runtime:94 Minutes

Post Credit-None

Plot-"A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the deaths of their parents. A modern take on Henry James' novella "The Turn of the Screw".

Starring-Mackenzie DavisFinn Wolfhard and Brooklyn Prince

My Thoughts

I will spend no time on this film, it was terrible and continues a trend of bad movies I have reviewed to star the year. there was nothing redeeming about this movie. the plot seemed somewhat interesting from the trailer but after seeing the film I ca ntell anyone that is not the case here. Rotten Tomatoes  gave the film a 13% saying "Stylish but muddled, this misbegotten adaptation of Henry James' classic novel will send horror-hungry viewers Turning to the source material instead". I cannot reccomend anyoen tosee this movie, its a complete pass.

Rating

Nothing redeeming here, complete pass 4.0/10!!

The fifth and last film to review this month is "Gretel & Hansel".

Runtime:87 Minutes

Post Credit-None

Plot-"A long time ago in a distant fairy tale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil".

Starring-Sophia LillisAlice Krige and  Jessica De Gouw

My Thoughts

I had high hopes for this film, and boy was I wrong, a disturbing trend of bad movies continues. This film was slow and tedious and boring literally nothing of note happens for the first hour of the movie. and when things do pick up the payoff is not satisfying at all. The acting was decent which was the highlight of the film other than that everything else is forgettable. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 61% saying "Gretel & Hansel's rich visuals satisfy, even if this adaptation of a classic fairytale gets a little lost in the woods on the storytelling front". The visuals did nothing for me but to each their own.

Rating

Decent acting cannot save an otherwise terrible movie 4.5/10!!
