Happy New Year!! A new year brings a new slew of Movies to review. Staring the year off with Insidious:The Last Key.
Run Time:103 Minutes
Post Credit-None
Plot-"Parapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier faces her most fearsome and personal haunting yet - in her own family home".
Starring- Lin Shaye, Javier Botet and Josh Stewart
My Thoughts
I am a big fan of the insidious series. the Original was one of the better films I saw back in 2011. Chapter 2 for me was just as good as the original and while Chapter 3 was not as good as the previous two films, it was still a solid entry in the series. I was eagerly awaiting this film and after seeing it I can say it was a solid film not great but solid. This film was another prequel to Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, and honestly I liked the road that the film developers went down. this film focused entirely on Elise (Lin Shaye) and her background leading up to what she became in the previous films, I enjoyed seeing how her character came to be and the struggles she endured all the way from a child to her adult form we see in all of the films. I also want to add that Lin Shaye did a great job and she has really made this role her own over these films. The rest of the cast was mostly unknowns but Tucker (Angus Sampson) and Specs (Leigh Whannell) return and play the characters the same as anyone who has seen the other films would expect. the rest of the cast did a good job and there were no terrible performances. I really didn't have much bad to say about this film other than the main demon in the film didn't feel up to snuff for me, and the ending was a little weak but that is down to personal preference.but the expected jump scares that have become synonymous with the insidious series are there and always welcome. the only other gripe I had with the film was the overall pacing of the film didn't flow as well as the other three films. Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 27% saying " Insidious: The Last Key offers
franchise star Lin Shaye another welcome opportunity to take the lead,
but her efforts aren't enough to rescue this uninspired sequel". I agree that this was a lin Shaye film but her performance was really good and while this film is the weakest of the four films it was still solid and worth seeing for anyone who is a fan of the insidious series.
Rating
Solid Entry in the series, Lin Shaye did a great Job, worth seeing!! 7.4/10!!!
The Second and Last film to review for the month is The Commuter.
Run Time:105 Minutes
Post Credit:None
Plot-"A businessman is caught up in a criminal conspiracy during his daily commute home".
Starring-Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson
My Thoughts
I have enjoyed Liam Neeson's recent action films from Taken 1,2,3 to The Grey, To Non-Stop or Run All night. I look forward to his films and when I saw the trailer for this film I knew I would be reviewing it. The film honestly was okay not great but not terrible (deff better than taken 3 lol). The acting was solid and I enjoyed the banter between Liam Neeson and Vera Farmiga character's they played off each other well. the rest of the cast did solid jobs. The plot for this film wasn't exactly something new (similar to another Liam Neeson Film Non-Stop but on a train instead of a plane) what I did like about this film was that the cast of characters all had screen time and was given a bit of depth to allow the viewer to make a connection with the characters which always helps. What I also enjoyed with the film was the fight scenes the camera angles used and the camera work was not what i expected to see but I enjoyed it. One thing I did not like was that the fear of losing his family which a main plot point in this film didn't feel strong enough, his family barely had any screen time and I really didn't make a connection with them or felt that Neeson's character really didn't have a strong connection with them either which made believing that he cared so much for his family a little hard to believe. after seeing the film play out I will add that the overall plot of the film was a bit weak for me, the pacing of the film wasn't bad but for me it felt weak and the ending while giving closure for the audience was not very satisfying. Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 55% saying "The Commuter's cast is better than its workmanlike script -
which helps make this reasonably diverting Liam Neeson action thriller
worth the price of a matinee ticket or rental, if not a full-price
ticket". I agree that the film had a very good cast who all did really good jobs and the script overall was weak, I wouldn't go as far as saying the film isn't worth a full price ticket (I saw it matinee) I would recommend this film for anyone who is a fan of Liam Neeson or who wants to see a decent thriller.
Rating
Solid film, not great but not terrible. Well acted, but a weak plot. 7.2/10!!!!
